SHL Asia’s design method is based on our mission, merC. Mindset. Empathy. Research. Creativity.
We acknowledge the importance of starting thing off with the right mindset. It is essential to meet clients as a blank canvas or an empty glass to receive the most of their dreams and aspiration.
By using empathy, it helps us to understand their point of view as well as their needs and wants in the project so we are able to respond appropriately to the situation. It also helps us to communicate our ideas in a way that makes sense to clients and vice versa.
With different dreams for every project, we never really stop learning. We conduct deep and thorough research to find the ideal solution that fits in every design aspect, this also include both literature and on-site research.
To implement theory into design, we emphasize on the creativity where SHL Asia people are encouraged to always think outside of the box and see things from different perspective. We view issue as challenges instead of obstacles thus every project is exciting and interesting.
The very first phase is vision stage during pre-agreement where we present the general concept of the design. We take Owner’s brief to make an initial design idea presentation. It shows teasers, mood and triggers the clients for the next design phase, a more detailed conceptual that we call scenario stage.
Scenario stage is the initial image ideas consultant present to be proposed with the owner. We take Client’s brief and instructions, rationalizing brief in relation to site conditions, local authority’s requirements, and consultants’ input to optimize design solutions for making the Project resulting in a detailed design brief for Client’s approval. On this stage, we also develop preliminary layout plans, perspective concept visuals and preliminary design for Client’s approval. The design concept is presented more explicitly and is broken down into details. We put story or scenario into our design that is supported with coloured plan, room programs and 3D render images for that full on design experience. This way, Client is able to see the overall design.
Once the design is approved, it is then proceeded into technical drawing which we call exploration stage. Exploration stage is a description of the initial project and the shape of the building that will be built later. On this stage, the design can be measured by height, length and width. We develop and prepare all documents drawing in more details and provide CAD drawing that is based on scenario stage. Detail and material specification along with vendor partners are chosen for budget calculation (BoQ) in this stage. We coordinate and review all documents, drawings and input of other consultants and ensure that all drawings, documentation and schedules are fully integrated and coordinated. Especially for hospitality projects, this stage is essential to see the feasibility and viability of the project.
Afterward, the exploration drawings are broken down part by part in detail drawing stage. Detail drawing is divided into two stages, tender drawing and construction drawing. Tender drawing is a development of exploration stage revised together from various parties. For this purpose, we provide drawings which are used a a benchmark by the Consultant Quantity Surveyor (QS) to calculate the Bill of Quantity (BoQ). These are the drawings that becomes a reference contractor bidders. Meanwhile, construction drawing is the reference for basis of approval by the Construction Management / Supervisor / Client for the Shop Drawing produced by the Contractor before the construction begin. At this phase, we coordinate and review of design documents with all the planning consultant to ensure drawings, documents and schedules have been integrated and coordinated. This step is one of the cores of our services so we make sure the accuracy and quality is at its best to support the construction progress.
Lastly, for us design process does not just stop once the drawings are completed, it continues until the project is done. We believe the importance of construction coordination and supervision. Coordination is work that is carried out without visiting the work location including to review shop drawings and sample material submitted by the contractor and to conduct online and offline meetings. Supervision is a visit to a project site including to check suitability of the design drawings with the condition on site. We also provide report and design recommendation for minor differences between the design and those built on site. As designers, we can provide design solution in case there are issues during construction work that would affect the design. We can also ensure that the project is built as what we vision it to be.
